Dark social is a phenomenon where users come to websites from unknown sources such as WhatsApp/Slack/email. Social media only has around 50% of what is considered "direct" traffic but in India, over 500 million users utilize Whatsapp and use dark social methods (mostly through MESSAGING/Mobile apps) to share around 70% to 80% of their social media posts. Use a range of analytics options, link structure, and qualitative metrics in measuring dark social as well.Dark social WhatsApp India marketing is not a niche problem. It is the default behaviour of the Indian digital user.
Indian companies have trouble assessing their marketing strategies due to issues with properly analysing how they are tracking and measuring their marketing strategies through dark social channels. Examples of dark social marketing in India today include the numerous untracked WhatsApp shares, private Telegram forwards and DMs with links on Instagram.
Because of the lack of visibility in your metrics, you are unable to attribute that traffic source to your website or brand. This guide will show you how to stop chasing impossible attribution and instead use a multi-channel account-based marketing (ABM) strategy to illuminate buying committee intent and accelerate pipeline.
What is dark social in digital marketing?
A "dark social" encounter occurs when a user interacts with another individual in a non-public or secure manner. Examples of this include WhatsApp forwards, Slack messages, email links, or conversations taking place via Discord threads. When a user participates in such activity and clicks on any of these links to access your website, Google Analytics categorizes their visit as "direct," meaning there is no record of what site they came from.
WhatsApp is the predominant means by which people share content with one another in India; whether that's sharing an article, a product link, a property brochure or a YouTube link via WhatsApp, it's happening at an alarming pace.WhatsApp India marketing is not a niche problem. It is the default behaviour of the Indian digital user.
Why "Direct Traffic" Is Lying to You?
Analytics platforms, such as Google Analytics 5 (GA5), have no direct relation to the concept of "direct traffic," which describes how all sessions on a site are categorized as having come from an "unknown" source when the website visitor did not input the URL into their browser.
Anonymous Social Sharing and Untracked Links: When someone shares a link, like through Slack/MMS/private social networks, there is no referral data attached to that source, which will make it show up as direct traffic.
Moving from HTTPS (secure) to HTTP (non-secure): When someone clicks on a hyperlink that takes them from a secure site to a non-secure site, referral data from that session will not be carried over by the browser.
Tracking Issues and Missing UTMs: If your team does not tag email newsletters and/or offline campaigns with UTMs, GA4 will not know the source of that traffic.
Browser Privacy: Some browsers use very strict privacy rules to prevent tracking parameters; any visit stripped of the referring URL will show up as direct traffic.
This is why traffic shows as direct at such high numbers for Indian businesses. It is not a brand recall. It is untracked WhatsApp sharing.
How Big Is the Dark Social Problem in India?
WhatApp is not merely a messaging service, it is the backbone to much of what allows people to stay connected in India. WhatsApp is how families communicate, coworker communicate and people within neighborhoods and businesses or social media follow similar topics interact with each other. Therefore, whenever something becomes popular in India, it usually starts its journey through WhatsApp.
At Big Growth Digital, we see this play out regularly across our real estate clientsA real estate developer sends a video of one of their properties to an NRI group on WhatsApp. That video is forwarded by users 200 times. 80 of those users view the video and click on the microsite. All 80 of those clicks are logged as direct visits to the microsite. There was no way for that developer to know how many visitors from the video reached their site. A similar example shows the lack of insight into dark social marketing. A D2C company witnessed a massive wave of traffic and conversions driven by a viral post in their women’s fashion group. The marketing team attributed this spike in sales to an Instagram advertising campaign being run during the same time, not realizing their mistake and allocating funds for future marketing based off of inaccurate data.
How to Track Dark Social in Google Analytics?
While it's impossible to escape from dark social, you can employ UTMs in tagging and tracking so that you will at least acknowledge its presence.
Step 1 - UTM tag all links that are shared privately. Share every link on WhatsApp, Email, or Telegram with a UTM parameter.
Step 2 - Create a WhatsApp referral traffic fix Indian Segment in GA4. Create a custom segment for all sessions where the source contains "whatsapp" or medium contains "dark_social". In this way, you will be able to hone in on tagging dark social traffic in one view, all consolidated into one unique segment - Volume, behavior, and conversion rate will be available separately.
Step 3: Correct your direct traffic segment. You should exclude sessions that have a page depth greater than 1 when you filter out your direct traffic sessions. Typically, people who are true direct visitors to your website will arrive through the homepage; however, people who come to your website through dark social will tend to come through deep linking (blog pages, product pages or project microsite pages). This separation gives a cleaner picture of hidden traffic attribution India marketers are missing.
Step 4: Use link shorteners with tracking capabilities when creating your short links (Bitly, Rebrandly, etc). These allow you to create a trackable short link that you can share in WhatsApp groups. When someone clicks on these links, you will receive a report detailing the time they clicked your link, where they were located as well as the device they were using when they clicked through. This is a great way to fix WhatsApp Referral Traffic and requires zero developer work for businesses in India.
This is how you take dark social tracking from being visible in Google Analytics to being actionable.
